The Salines educational village
In Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, discover an ancestral craft! Saliculture was at the origin of the craft industry on the island of Oleron. Salt marshes have been present on the island since Gallo-Roman times. Today, however, oyster farming has replaced salt production. That’s why, over the last twenty years, the Petit-Village salt marsh has been created from scratch to showcase the methods used by salt workers. You’ll find the colorful huts that make up the charm of this part of the Ile d’Oléron. Local artists, craftsmen and producers bring the site to life. By boat, on foot or by bike, you can explore the salt marshes at your own pace.
The Port des Salines ecomuseum
The Port des Salines eco-museum, which has been awarded the “Pole Nature” label, beautifully presents the history of the island’s salt industry.
