Charente-Maritime, a vacation destination (episode 2)!

France’ s leading tourist department, Charente-Maritime is a veritable mosaic of colors, landscapes, moods and lights. Among its many must-see sites are hidden nuggets not to be missed. From north to south, east to west, let’s take a look at this immense playground for nature lovers… Your Oléron St-Tro’Park campsite gives you its best addresses!

A town: Meschers-sur-Gironde

Located less than an hour’s drive from Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, the Grottes de Régulus will leave you breathless. These strange cavities in the cliffs, known colloquially as the “holes of Meschers”, are of natural origin. But they have been transformed by human hands over the course of history. As troglodytic dwellings, they served as a refuge in 1814 for a French ship that was voluntarily scuttled to avoid being surrendered to the English. These luminous limestone cliffs form an exceptional site not to be missed during a stay in Charente-Maritime.

An unusual place: the Gallo-Roman site of Fâ

Among the activities not to be missed in Charente-Maritime is a visit to the Gallo-Roman site of Le Fâ. Doesn’t sound familiar? Be curious. Drive just a little past Meschers, and you’ll discover a major archaeological site that has been the subject of programmed excavations since 1994. The Fâ site in Barzan is home to 2,000 years of mystery. Nearly a thousand objects have been collected. Immerse yourself in Gallo-Roman times through five themed rooms…

A family outing: La Palmyre Zoo

Nestled in the heart of the Coubre forest, between La Tremblade and Royan, the Zoo de la Palmyre awaits you for unforgettable encounters. Just a 30-minute drive from your campsite on the south of theIle d’Oléron, come and visit one of Europe’s most renowned zoos! Zoo de la Palmyre is home to over 1,600 mammals, birds and reptiles of 110 different species. Meet gorillas, snakes, rhinoceroses, jaguars…

A romantic getaway: the Marais Poitevin

On land or sea, in fresh or salt water, Charente-Maritime can also be visited by nature. Make a stopover in the Marais Poitevin. Take a boat and lose yourself in the endless canals… and discover an authentic green setting. This natural destination spans three departments: Charente Maritime, Vendée and Deux-Sèvres. How about a visit on foot, by bike or by boat to the Venise Verte?
