Le Marais aux oiseaux

Kingfishers, storks, European orioles, greylag geese, coots and hoopoes… From the most emblematic species to the rarest, the Marais aux oiseaux (Bird Marsh) is the perfect place to discover a wide range of birds and birds of prey. During your vacation at the Saint-Tro’Park campsite on theIle d’Oléron, head for Dolus-d’Oléron to visit this natural treasure trove. An ideal place to recharge your batteries in peace and quiet.

A discovery park and rescue center

Opened in 1983, the Marais aux oiseaux is owned by the Charente-Maritime department. It actually extends over 130 hectares of deciduous woods and former salt marshes that have become sensitive natural areas. At the heart of this 10-hectare property, you’ll discover the educational discovery park and the wildlife rescue center. Here, over 600 animals of 40 different species live side by side. Le Marais aux oiseaux also cares for between 1,500 and 2,000 wild animals in distress every year! You’ll be strolling through a woodland and marshland trail. Here, everything is done to raise public awareness and educate children about environmental protection. Le Marais aux oiseaux is one of 14 Maisons in the Echappées Nature network in Charente-Maritime. It is also part of the Explore Oléron tourist network, created by the island’s community of communes.

Activities for the whole family

Twenty minutes from your pitch at the Saint-Tro’Park campsite, treasure hunts, guided tours, discovery workshops and other surprises await you. In all, some twenty events are organized for visitors to the Marais aux oiseaux every year. At the start of the tour, children can rub shoulders with some particularly familiar mammals and birds in a mini-farm. The tour then continues along a 1.5km path, lined with information points on the life and habits of the species. At the halfway point, take in the sights! A 9m-high observatory offers a panoramic view of the site. Equipped with a binocular telescope, you can observe the herons, birds of prey and other small wading birds that frequent the site. It’s an outing that combines relaxation and discovery for the whole family, in a park that plays an active role in the protection and understanding of nature. With the Chassiron lighthouse, Fort Boyard and La Cotinière, this is a visit not to be missed!
