La Palmyre Zoo, a place to marvel at

Just a stone’s throw from the ocean and the beaches of Charente-Maritime near Royan, come and visit one of Europe’s most renowned zoos! Zoo de la Palmyre invites you to meet over 1,600 mammals, birds and reptiles of 110 different species. It extends over 18 hectares in the heart of the Côte Sauvage. Every year, almost 700,000 visitors come and visit the zoo, much to the delight of children. Among the species on display are cheetahs, tigers, lions, snow leopards, Asian elephants, Rothschild giraffes , white rhinoceroses, jaguars, hippopotamuses, gorillas, snakes, crocodiles, lynxes, tapirs, marmosets, orang-utangs and more.

An important role in species conservation

The Zoo de la Palmyre is not just an enjoyable and entertaining outing for the public, it also plays a role in the conservation of endangered species, scientific research and environmental education. A veritable conservatory for endangered species, the new generation of zoological parks is motivated by a desire not just to show, but to help others understand. The Zoo participates in some fifty European breeding programs. It also funds some twenty wildlife protection programs around the world. Every year, it registers between 200 and 300 births! Educational workshops are available for school groups, with a variety of themes adapted to their level. Founded in 1966 by Claude and Irène Caillé, this unique site has become a leading tourist destination on the Atlantic coast.
