Four ideas for outings when it rains on the Ile d’Oléron?
Located in the Charente Maritime region, the largest island in mainland France is an ideal vacation destination. The climate on the island of Oléron, particularly mild in winter, its fine sandy beaches, its southern flora characterized by oleanders, eucalyptus, agaves, mimosas… make it a place of a thousand scents. These favorable climatic conditions are also influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Even if autumn and winter are particularly rainy periods (and that’s good for water resources), it’s always a pleasure to stroll along the paths or go sightseeing! Your campsite on Oléron, Saint-Tro’Park in Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, will take you on a stroll!

1/ Visit the Ile d’Oléron museum
The Musée de l’île d’Oléron, located in Saint-Pierre, is an excellent introduction to the island. It’s one of the best places to discover the island’s heritage since prehistoric times. This autumn 2022, during the school vacations, the museum team is offering children and their families workshops and treasure hunts to discover the permanent collections, as well as a temporary exhibition entitled “Oleron, an island, landscapes”.
2/ Walking with your nose in the air
When you say vacation, you mean rejuvenation. You can’t stay cooped up just because there’s a shower or a steady drizzle… On an island, rain can arrive very quickly and then disappear just as quickly! So why not go out and face the elements, well covered up? Walking with your nose in the air, and on
3/Discover the oyster town
Located in Marennes Oléron, the Cité de l’huître is a museographic space entirely dedicated to the world of oyster farming. Four themed huts take visitors on a voyage of discovery of France’s favorite shellfish. Now’s the time to go there, and pick up some good addresses to prepare for Christmas!
4/ Go to the Eldorado cinema
The Eldorado cinema in Saint-Pierre d’Oléron is the only art house cinema on the island. Its vocation as a cinema-theater has existed since the beginning of the last century! It’s run by the LOCAL association. Three air-conditioned rooms welcome you: digital, 3D and argentic. Every day, the Eldorado offers two or three screenings a year (4 or 5 during school terms). It regularly offers a variety of programs and organizes themed film festivals. To see the program, click here.
