The Moëze-Oléron reserve
Created in 1985 to protect coastal ecosystems, salt marshes, dunes, lagoons and wetlands, the Moëze-Oléron reserve covers an area of around 850 hectares. It begins south of Boyardville and extends as far as Château d’Oléron, covering 14 km of classified coastline. Managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral, it is home to a rich and diverse flora and fauna, including many species of migratory birds. The site can be explored along several trails. Self-guided and guided tours all year round.
Le Marais aux Oiseaux
Nestling in the heart of theIle d’Oléron, in the communes of Dolus and Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, the Marais aux Oiseaux is a veritable sanctuary for wild fauna and flora, especially birds. You’ll have the opportunity to observe or hear such emblematic species as the grey heron, the little egret and the white spoonbill. In recent years, two pairs of storks have taken up summer residence here. An interpretive trail takes you through this exceptional site. An observatory perched 9 meters high offers a panoramic view of the marsh. LPO volunteers are on hand to lend you binoculars and spotting scopes.
The Port des Salines salt marsh
At the entrance to theIle d’Oléron, in the commune of Grand-Village-Plage, the Port des Salines salt marsh offers a playful stroll in a variety of settings. Discover how a salt marsh works, the history of Oléron’s salt industry and the marsh’s flora and fauna. A free, open-access interpretation trail punctuates the walk, exploring the magical world of salt and marshes. Fort Royer marshes
Located south of Boyardville, between land and sea, the Fort-Royer estate is part of the Moëze-Oléron Nature Reserve. This little jewel of the Marennes-Oléron Basin organizes guided tours, storytelling walks, hikes, gourmet treasure hunts, and workshops on fauna, flora and heritage. A guided tour introduces visitors to coastal birds and their habitat. It’s also an opportunity to discover the secrets of the Marennes-Oléron oyster . If Marennes Oléron oysters have a unique taste, it’s because they’re matured in claires, former salt marshes converted into oyster maturing basins.
