The history of Fort Boyard

In the 17ᵉ century, a fortress was planned to protect Rochefort’s arsenal. In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte gave the go-ahead for the work, which was completed in 1857. Following its completion, the Fort was used as a prison for Prussian soldiers during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 and then for the commune’s political prisoners.

Finally, during the Second World War, it became a training target for the Germans. From 1ᵉʳ February 1950, it was classified as a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture. However, the fort was abandoned until 1990. In 1988, the fortress was bought by a production company, which turned it into a media mecca in Charente-maritime.
